Always on the go!

Well, the time has come to update the blog, which also means I am not studying for my PT cert. once again. September was extremely busy with Brady's Smile, Ryder starting kindergarten, Gage's mom passing away, the McGehee's moving back, the arrival of Talan, kids activities, and MD and vet appointments. How did we survive? We are finally getting into a routine and settling down.

While we were in Nags Head in August, we received a phone call that Gage's mom's cancer had spread to her brain and other organs. She got very sick very quickly. Gage traveled back and forth to Hershey and Clearfield several times to visit and be sure she was receiving great care. It was a very difficult and draining couple of weeks to see her endure so much. She fought so hard and passed away the middle of Sept. The kids and I also visited, but tried to maintain some normalcy here in VA as Ryder started kindergarten.

Upon return from the beach, a friend and neighbor proposed doing a lemonade stand fundraiser for Brady's Smile. I explained that I had a tremendous amount going on, not to mention Juel was still only a few months old, but that I had been trying to find a way to pull something off. With her as the coordinator, I contributed as much time as I could make. We made signs, solicited bakers, and experimented with lemonade. On Sept. 5th, we set up in my yard, our Brady's Smile lemonade stand and bake sale. We had a fabulous turnout and more importantly a lot of fun. All the doors to my house were open as kids ran through for 4 hours straight, playing and taking turns luring passersby to the stand.

The following week, Ryder started kindergarten. He has adjusted well and has been his usual social butterfly self. His teacher seems great and I have heard nothing but good things about her. He already shared his butterfly chrysalides. We've had many, but they don't seem to get tired of watching the butterflies emerge.

I don't remember the exact day, but in there somewhere I got a phone call from my friend Alyce. Amidst everything going on with Gage's mom, she brought me to tears once again when she told me they would be moving back to VA. I just couldn't believe it. It had been a year since I had seen her/them and Jack-Jack was just a few weeks old when they left. It was so strange to think that they would return and he wouldn't have a clue who I was. It was almost a year to the day since I had watched them leave and head back to Louisiana. Not a day I care to remember well.

Although there were missed runs, I continued to meet Jennifer in the mornings during the week and Jennifer and/or Peggy on the weekends for the longer runs. We started thinking of ideas...things we could do to welcome them back. We decided we would surprise them at the airport by picking them up. I arranged it with Brad, so when the day came, Jennifer and I and all 6 kids were off to the airport for the surprise. Jennifer had made glitter signs and each kid had some flowers for Allie. It was so much fun. The anticipation nearly killed me. Back at the house...we messaged some friends to meet us for a few welcome home drinks and champagne.

And the wait continued...until FINALLY Talan Chase Lingle was born on Thursday Sept. 24th. My new nephew was 12 days late and weighed in at 7 lbs. 12.9 oz. We will get to meet him in a few weeks when we head to PA for the Halloween night Brady's Smile banquet. I will always have memories of calling Tim at the hospital for an update. At one point I called...Tim answered and said Maggie was in the bathroom. All I could hear her say was, "is it too late for the epidural?" I couldn't help but giggle, and feel bad at the same time. She had progressed very quickly and was asking for mercy which she was granted.

It's been a few weeks, and as it turns out, Allie (Alyce's daughter) got into the same class as Ryder and William (Jennifer's son). With 7 kindergarten's nearly filled to capacity, it's kind of ironic. Needless to say, none of them can get away with anything. I had lunch with Ryder today and as he was headed back to class, he grabbed Allie's hand and they walked together. Another mom friend who volunteers several days a week, said they do it all the time. I just laughed....so cute! We're so glad to have them back.

Sunday morning was the 25th anniversary Army Ten Miler. Alyce was able to get a bib the night before (thanks Suzanne! hope your knee heals soon) and join us for the race. Another friend Erica also joined us for the race. It is definitely at the top of my favorite races. From the paratroopers to the pre-race Pledge and tribute songs, "Proud to be an American," really a neat thing to be a part of. The announcers are fantastic, get everyone dancing and singing as they start and finish the race. Always great entertainment as well as fan support along the way. Finishing a little under 1:19 was a nice treat. I definitely pooped out the last 3 miles, but with a little extra mileage could have easily shed a minute. Actually, my legs just cramped a little, but the rest of me felt surprisingly great. Was an enjoyable race.

I usually wrap it up with things to come. Ryder is still playing flag football for the Grizzlies. Carly is taking ballet once a week and LOVES it! I'm sure there will be more. We've enjoyed keeping up with Josh in Italy and Andy will be leaving for Iraq in a few weeks. Wishing him a safe and speedy return. Just a few more weeks until the Richmond marathon on Carly's birthday, the 14th. Juel is almost 6 months old and still just as sweet as can be. Seriously, I could probably count the # of times she's cried on one hand...since she was born. What an angel. Delayed CT update as well. A few days before my CT, the lump started to go away. The surgeon still thought I should have it. All was normal, just a slight inconsistency where the abdominal muscles come together. His best guess was that I tore an abdominal muscle, it formed a hematoma (pocket of blood), that took weeks to heal. No worries, all is well and back to normal...for me anyway!

Falling Behind...

Okay, okay...I'm getting caught up. Everyone has been asking, "why haven't you been updating the blog?" The simple answer is, I'm just too damn busy! Ryder finished track at the end of July. Since last post, we've been on the go. We spent a week at the beach with some friends and grandparents and a week in PA with family. Just before leaving for the beach, we traded in the trailblazer for a new to us suburban, a more functional vehicle for transporting kids, dogs, strollers, etc. We are known for not making the wisest car buying decisions, so just add it to the list. And as of today, Gage is the proud new owner of a new to him Rubicon which he has been eying all summer. Another awesome decision! We've learned one thing though...made in the USA means buy extra warranty...haha, lol for sure! It will be fun for all of us. He works so hard for me to be able to stay at home with the kids. I can't wait for him to bring it home so I can take my girlfriends for a ride. That means you Cynthia, Jennifer, mystery passenger #3??, and anyone else who would like to hop in! We really had a great time at the beach, especially since it was a bit of a last minute vacation. It was great for the kids to hang out with Grandma and Pappy but play with some friends too. The weather was very hot and humid and the mosquitos were terrible! Gage and Ryder learned to skimboard which was quite entertaining.

We have so much to come. Ryder will be starting school September 8th. The girls and I will be joining our friends that morning for a boohoo breakfast at the school. He will do great I'm sure. He is very excited to be in the same class as his friends William, Sierra, and hopefully mystery passenger #3's daughter. We plan to walk to school and he can ride the bus home. It will drop him off just outside our door which is really convenient. We will miss him, but he is going to have a wonderful time! I hope to start (again) studying for my personal trainer cert. during nap time. Wish me luck! I would really like to start working part time at Freedom Center.

The girls and I are still training for the Richmond marathon on Nov. 14th, and except for a few minor setbacks are doing great. We're a little off our goal training times for qualifying for Boston, so we'll have to see what happens over the coming weeks. Except for Peggy, who is right on track! You go girl! We're hoping the cooler weather and other issues will work themselves out. We look forward to mystery passenger #3 joining us for the early morning runs. We have all been overwhelmed by the excitement and anticipation of mid Sept. More on that later.

Ryder started football last week. He is now a Gainesville Grizzly. Don't worry, it's just flag. He is loving it! I think he was most thrilled about his RED mouth guard. He had fun wearing his PSU jersey to practice. Carly will be starting ballet and fall fun at Freedom Center in just a few weeks. She is slowly but surely being forced into potty training. Wow, can you say stubborn?

We've also been having fun using SKYPE with our family. The connection has been lousy at times with those in central PA, but we're all getting better and working the kinks out. Josh leaves for Italy in just a few days, so we look forward to keeping in touch with him while he is there. We got to check out Erica's new apt. room at Lock Haven. Go figure there was a "Drama Queen" sign by her bed! And the room radiated pink!

Maggie's birthday was yesterday and she is hanging in there. Baby "T" is due 2 weeks from today! I'm sure I left something out, but I just cannot remember everything.

The Jual behind the Juel

April 14, 2009, Juel joined our family. I was flooded with emails and messages inquiring about how we came up with the name "Juel." As mentioned at the time, it was a name that I had loved from the moment I heard it and simply explained as the name of a friend of a friend (my friend Jennifer). Jennifer is one of my running partners and we are training to run a few races together this fall. Along with her training, she will also be walking to prepare for the 3 day Susan G. Komen breast cancer walk. Jual is a very good friend of hers that is living with Stage IV breast cancer. I could not begin to tell you her heartbreaking story, but will provide you with the links to share. I hope that you will help support Jennifer through donations in her ongoing support of Jual and her battle with breast cancer. If you are not able to make a donation at this time, please pray for her and her family through these difficult times. Your donations and support are greatly appreciated. Click on the photo link above to connect to Jennifer's donation page.

This is a copy of the message I received earlier this week from Jennifer:
This year, I'll be participating in a very special event called the Breast Cancer 3-Day.

I'll walk 60 miles over the course of three days with thousands of other women and men. The net proceeds will support breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment through Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund.

I've agreed to raise at least $2,300 in donations. So I need your help. Would you please consider making a donation of any amount? Even a few dollars will help me reach my goal. Keep in mind how far I'm walking - and how hard I'll have to train. You can give online at www.The3Day.org. Just follow the link below to visit my personal fundraising webpage and make a donation. You can also call 800.996.3DAY to donate over the phone.

As many of you know, my good friend Jual is fighting stage VI breast cancer. She is a 32 year old mother of three adorable children- her oldest just turned 5. We are doing this walk with Jual in hope of raising awareness and money. Jual found out in late June that her cancer has spread to her lungs, yet she is staying positive and leading our team of amazing women during this 60 mile walk! We would love your support, and your continued thoughts and prayers!
A little of Jual's story:
http://jualsgems.blogspot.com/

According to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, approximately 200,000 American women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and nearly 40,000 will die from the disease. That's why I'm walking so far. To do something bold about breast cancer. I hope that you'll share this incredible adventure with me - by supporting me in my fundraising efforts.

Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Sincerely,
Jennifer

P.S. Ask your employer if they will double your donation through a matching gift program!

June Photos

June in a Nutshell

As usual, the month of June flew by. It seems like I was just asking myself, "what are we going to do this summer?" And now I find myself collecting clothes for Ryder for school already. Sadly, it will be here before I know it. We've been on the go, doing everything we can. There just does not seem to be enough time in a day. Juel is growing up so quickly, starting to "coo" and smiling. She is very laid back and enjoys napping in the cool breeze at the pool. She loves her familiar toys and looking at herself in the mirror. Ryder can always make her smile. Carly never gets close enough.

The beginning of the month brought lots of rain which was great for our thriving garden. Several thunderstorms chased Bailey to his favorite hiding spot, the bathtub. I even caught him napping with his other nemesis, the steam vac. I had put it in there after cleaning one day to keep it from leaking on the floor. What a sight! A thunderstorm also chased Ryder and his friends inside temporarily during his first camp out sleepover. Our friends and neighbors enjoyed a cookout with us, making s'mores and mountain pies. The kids and dads spent the night in the tent after the thunderstorm passed.

Ryder finished another successful season of blastball (t-ball). We've made some great friends on the team. After going round and round about taking a vacation this year, we finally decided to join some of them in Nags Head. We found a really cute place for a very affordable rate so it worked out. We had a play date in The Plains with some of his teammates and friends. They have a beautiful home and pool. It was so relaxing and the kids loved it!

Finally...the long anticipated TRAIN RIDE!! Grandma came to VA to ride with us back to PA. She brought 2 caterpillars that she collected from Jeff and Lorri's garden, during her stop there the day before. We spent the night in a hotel in Breezewood and got up early the next morning and headed to Orbisonia, to the East Broad Top Railroad http://www.ebtrr.com/. Pappy met us there. We watched them load the coal into the steam engine before pulling it out of the roundhouse and across the turntable. Ryder also got to ride a "speeder car" and drive a "hand car." He was thrilled. After a long day, we made the trip back to VA. Everyone was exhausted but had a great time.

Ryder was anxiously waiting to turn 5. And after another loooooong week, he finally hit the big 5. Once again he had to check the mirror to see if he had grown overnight. We surprised him with new roller blades before breakfast. He was SO excited as he had been wishing for a pair. He's been using them almost every day, getting better and better. He figured out how to use the break and is really catching on. Carly is not far behind on her princess skates. What a sight!!

Ryder made the Guppies and has enjoyed learning to swim with fins and a kick board. He really loves it and the program is great for the kids. With Gage being gone 12 hours a day, we are very fortunate to have so many opportunities to keep us busy. It's a lot of work for me sometimes but I enjoy it all.

Pap Pap and Grammy came for a visit. We spent the afternoon at the pool and cooked out for dinner. Sunday morning we did a little shopping before grabbing lunch at Wegmans. I saw a few moms from the gym there. It amazes me that after 7+ years of living here, I find myself rarely going anywhere without bumping into someone I know. I never thought I'd see the day where this place felt so quaint.

The tale of Steve the caterpillar... One of the caterpillars made a cocoon, the other seamed lost in the leaves below. We believed it had died. After days of waiting, the butterfly emerged. We decided to walk over to Cynthia's to show her and drop something off. The butterfly rode on Ryder's hand the entire way. We decided to leave him on a bush at Cynthia's, where he would be safe. I got texts from Cynthia throughout the evening and into the next morning that he was still there. We stopped to check on him on the way to the park the next day and he was gone. We figured he had flown away to live his life. After the park, we returned home to pack our bags and head to the pool. As we were loading up the car, Carly says, "she's so beautiful butterfly." As I'm packing I am apologizing to Carly, explaining to Carly that he flew away. She keeps saying how beautiful, and I turned around to see a butterfly in the bug house. I thought, no way that butterfly came back! what?! Well after digging around in the leaves at the bottom I discovered the other cocoon had formed and this was the 2nd butterfly. The kids believed the first one came home, so that's the story we went with.

On to the running... 2 weeks ago, I had several days of pain so severe in my butt and leg that I had difficulty walking. Ice, stretching, and motrin gave me little relief. I thought maybe it was sciatica. Sunday while standing in Wegmans, my lower back shifted and the pain was almost instantaneously gone. I was having intermittent tingling in my left foot after that and into Monday. Monday I saw the doctor and was diagnosed with SI (sacro-iliac) inflammation. Feeling much better now, just a little sore, I'm continuing my quest. For better or worse, I bit the bullet and registered for the Richmond Marathon which is on Carly's birthday this year. I continue to have issues with fluid retention, although my blood pressure has been great. After gaining 8 pounds since Juel was born, I had originally arranged to see the doctor regarding that. I did not feel it would be possible to train for Richmond without the diuretic that made me feel so fabulous before having Juel. I was not able to take it during pregnancy because it disrupts cord blood flow, but was surprised to be allowed to resume while breastfeeding. I dropped 5 pounds in 3 days and have already started to see and feel the results. I wouldn't go without it now. I have a few races between now and Richmond and may add a few more as long as they don't interfere with family activities. I was bummed to find out that the Ragnar Relay is not going to work out this year, but I'll be up for it next year. I'd like to get my personal trainer certification as well. I received all the reading material in the mail, but now...finding the time to read it! If anybody knows where I can find some, let me know.

Well...that's June in a nutshell...

Tiki Bash '09

The hostess with the mostess!! Thanks again Rob, Jeannie, and Fam! Thanks for the Skid Mark!

The kids took late afternoon naps anticipating a late night at the LaBella's. We headed over to their Tiki party with the McElroy's around 9. It was just getting dark, the music was playing, lights were shining, kids playing in the moon bounce. It was fun for all. The food was great, the service was awesome, and the conversation was perfect! It was just missing one thing...well 4 things... We Miss You!! I got a chance to chat with Jennifer and caught up with Dyanne, who I had not seen in a few weeks since being away from the gym. Bummer she had a triathalon this morning, so no "cheers!" The "boys" frequented the Mai Tai and Blue Hawaiian gazebo, and I do mean frequented, much to the delight of the ladies guarding the beverage dispenser. We had a really great time catching up with everyone and enjoying the lovely night. Ryder ran off with the kids and checked in every now and again. He was happy to see Will and Matt and Dave. He met some new friends too. He was fascinated by the air hockey table and Wii rock band, mostly the drums. He and Dave shared "a few" mini chocolates as Gage later showed me the handful of wrappers they had given him. They had a nice selection of music playing, but about midnight the tempo changed... Boom Boom Pow! We turned around and the 5th grade girls had taken over...uncensored! Great ipod running song, so I finally added it this morning. It might make me go into a full sprint, ha ha. Gage and Ryder made a "pit stop" on the way out as we waited for Ross to catch up with "one for the road...or 3." It took quite a while, but we finally made it up the trail and back home around 1 with all 3 kids loaded on the stroller. Ryder was exhausted. Needless to say, it was a WHOLE lot easier getting there than getting home. Somehow Cynthia and I took a total of 4 kids and came home with 6! I kicked Gage's sorry butt off the couch and sent him for a Caribou Mint Condition at 7:30 this morning!! hahaha...I get the last laugh! It looks like it's going to be a great day...the boys are headed to Lake Brittle to go fishing.
